VST telemedicine consultations are documented using a customised REDcap report form. Clinical details and timeline metrics are documented allowing for detailed data analysis and reporting. At the completion of the REDcap form a letter is generated, documenting the key clinical details of the consultation. It is then promptly sent to the referring hospital for inclusion in the patients medical record [either by paper, or pdf into the electronic medical record (EMR)]
REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. It was developed by an informatics team at Vanderbilt University. While REDCap can be used to collect virtually any type of data it is specifically geared to support online or offline data capture for research studies and operations. The REDCap Consortium, a vast support network of collaborators, is composed of thousands of active institutional partners in over one hundred countries who utilise and support REDCap.
The other key element to VST is close integration with the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry (AuSCR). AuSCR is a collaborative national stroke outcomes and processes of care database to monitor, promote and improve the quality of acute stroke care.
The data AuSCR collects guides hospital quality improvement activities to reduce variations in care, and ultimately, decrease preventable deaths, disability, or recurrent stroke. The aim of the AuSCR is to promote best practice stroke care nationally.
The AuSCR is used to collect data from participating hospitals across Australia using an online web tool, the Australian Stroke Data Tool (AuSDaT). Hospitals can use the online tool to:
• store patient data
• produce reports summarising patient data
• export data for local analyses
• support performance reviews, presentations, and publications
